Yet Another Review for "Love and Other Drugs"

Here's a user review of killathrilla91 of Love and Other Drugs:

Just saw it at a screening in Orange County. It was much much better than I expected going it. I was expecting something good from Ed Zwick and Anne Hathaway but Jake Gyllenhal really tore it up. This movie is very, very good and will be a huge hit commercially and critically when it comes out. I will say it is long. It has the perfect mix of gross out comedy, serious dramatics, and emotionally connecting love story. The film is really stuck in my head since i saw it. I go and see as many films as I can, and have seen many but this was a fantastic DRom Com. It was parts of Knocked Up, Funny People, and 500 Days of Summer, but with some Up in the Air and Thank You for Smoking and genuine Julia Roberts love story territory. But I must say, as a 20 year old guy, it was very goddamn good.

Anne Hathaway was very convincing with her Parkinson's. The film does a great job with teaching the audience both about Parkinson's and (legitimate) Pharmaceuticals sales. She is stage 1 and acts the part. She is a rebel girl and does a great job. She is EXTREMELY sexy in this movie and this will probably get her voted #1 Sexiest woman in every magazine on earth next year. Brave girl and completely sexy and tasteful...most of the time.
This is absolutely, hands down the best role Jake Gyllenhal has ever played. He might have been dramatic and gay in Brokeback but he is so comfortable as the smooth talking, answer for everything, sex seeking Jamie it really shocked me. I actually have faith he will be good in Prince of Persia after seeing his range in this. He is the cocky part of Thank You For Smoking, with better and more prolific dialogue, but the heartwarming lead of 500 Days of Summer, but with even more redeeming qualities.
The movie was laugh out loud funny the entire film. It never let the film get too serious without a few laughs or the characters making a few jokes about the drama. Supporting characters were great. Oliver Platt played a great typical Oliver Platt role but with great writing and no restraint. Judy Greer was cute and bitchy Judy Greer. Hank Azaria was also quite memorable and hilarious as a womanizing doctor. Jamie's brother is definitely a Jonah Hill type/looking guy but as the movie goes on you can't help but like him. He is in some of the best scenes in the film.
The chemistry is off the charts between Jake and Anne which is obvious but the other characters do a fantastic job standing out as well. I have seen a lot of films and enjoy good films of all genres but this might be the best Romantic Dramedy I have ever seen.

Another Review for "Love and Other Drugs"

A review for Love and Other Drugs was posted by mike c on IMDB:

Saw a preview tonight. Really, really good. Plenty of nudity from the leads....always thought of Anne as too skinny, but yowza! Quite the tear-jerker, yet finds time to be charming and funny. Anne Hathaway was totally off my radar but I was totally in love from the 1st wild sex scene. Lots of Jake whoring around too. The brother was a poor man's Jonah Hill, but he was quite entertaining in the end. Some pretty gross moments, especially one involving a sex video but it really made me laugh. Judy Greer of Arrested Development was cool in a small role as a naughty nurse. Story of a sales rep for Viagra who falls for a beautiful artist with (no spoiler here). Well paced, well acted and well written.

Preliminary 2011 Oscar Contenders: Love and Other Drugs

Brad Brevet of Rope of Silicon has posted his list of Preliminary 2011 Oscar Contenders. There, he gives an overview of the films to expect in the 2010-2011 awards season. He gave a short glimpse of Love and Other Drugs and Anne's possible Oscar nomination:

Ed Zwick's Love and Other Drugs is already earning plenty of buzz with many saying Anne Hathaway is a surefire Best Actress nominee. Hathaway plays a woman who has Parkinson's and co-stars opposite Jake Gyllenhaal who's character falls in love with Hathaway. Many will see it's another one of those performances gaining attention due to the fact it involves a handicap or disease, and with Hathaway's continued support among the Academy ranks if the performance holds up it could be her first win, which many thought would come in 2009 when she lost to Kate Winslet for The Reader. It's a reunion for the two Brokeback Mountain stars and with the film's supposed critical eye of the pharmaceutical industry it could earn additional sympathy from all corners. It will be interesting to see what screenwriter Charles Randolph can pull off considering his previous screenplay for The Life of David Gale andThe Interpreter weren't exactly praised.

First Screening Reviews for "Love and Other Drugs"!

Hollywood Elsewhere has posted some test screen reviews for Anne's upcoming movie, "Love and Other Drugs" with Jake Gyllenhaal. Here's what they have to say:

Gyllenhaal and Hathaway's love affair is the main thing. Hathaway's Maggie is coping with stage one of Parkinson's -- a very intense and interesting charatcer, well versed in her sickness. And Jake is trying to sell Viagra, and they meet and are attracted and end up having an affair.

The script take pains to paint the Gyllenhaal character as a rake, a ladies' man. Zwick doesn't do that good a job in some respects. There's a lot of bullshit Eloi humor and basically shitty schtick. Mostly about the younger brother being a fat-ass. There's some lame orgy in the middle of it with Jake accidentally overdosing on Viagra...girls at a party cause him to swallow too much of it, and he won't go down, resulting in priapism.

The most exciting part of the film is their relationship. A lot of nudity, a lot of really well done lovemaking stuff, and some of it that isn't so good. It's hard to explain. But Hathaway really knocks it out of the park...she's amazing, wonderful. Gyllenhaal is not as impressive, in my view. He's good in this but he can be a cypher. He's got a pretty narrow range. His character is a really smart guy with no drive...he could have been a doctor but he didn't do it. He's a good salesman but also a ladies' man. But Hathaway dominates.

So the relationship part is good, the pharmaceutical stuff is good. And like I said, Platt has a great speech at the end.

Hathaway is so great she's almost in a different movie. They movie spends some time on the Parkinson's effects. She and Jake go to a big drug fair, and there's an alternative convention across the street focusing on organic Parkinson's remedies, and she goes over to this event. We see some real Parkinson's people talking up their personal stuff the way the unemployed talked for Up In The Air. At one point she's shown taking senior citizens across the border to get cheaper drugs in Canada.

Hathaway is a hard case, in a sense. She doesn't want a real love affair with anyone because she knows it's not going to last because she's fucked. The symptoms of stage one Parkinson's are intermittent jitters and losing physical ability, hands shaking...she's in that stage, and taking drugs to control that. But you're feeling all through it that this is a must-happen relationship.

The core of the romance is Jake's overcoming his shallow relationship history, and Anne overcoming her emotionally aloof thing. And she's really wonderful, absolutely wonderful."
